Final Reflection

Through this course, I had a true feeling about how important effective and professional communication is. I will illustrate this point by two examples of mine.

Before I take this course, I knew nothing about writing meeting agenda. So when I was the president of photography committee in the hall, before I arrange a meeting, I never sent meeting agenda to the members. Therefore, at the beginning of every meeting, I need to employ some time to tell the members the agenda of the meeting orally. In addition, I found it is difficult to ask the members to give some new ideas during the meeting. This might be because it is hard to think of new ideas within a short time. Based on what I learned from this course, however, if I could send meeting agenda to the members beforehand to let them know the contents of the meeting, they might do some preparation and the meeting would go more smoothly and efficiently.

The other example is that before I take the course, I did not know there is a standard format of citing references for a formal documentary material such as research report. Six months ago, I participated in an essay competition, which required the participants to compose a 4000 words essay on a certain topic and send the essay to the organizer. Today I relook at my essay and find that all the citing works at the end of the essay were done in a wrong way. I did not follow to any formal format of reference, such as APA format. This made my essay very unprofessional and I think the judgers of the competition were very likely to deduct marks because of this.

In the future, I believe, these two kinds of situation will never happen. This is because, from the course, I have already developed many effective and professional communication skills, including writing meeting agenda and composing research report. With these skills, I will be able to communicate with others more effectively.

I agree with you that writing a professional report with APA format is a new chapter for me. While we were writing our reports last time, we put our whole list of references at the last page of our report. But in our survey report, we have a lot of things to follow the rules such as citing the sources, literature review, and APA report format. Therefore, Es2007s course gave the opportunity for me to learn the professional report writing.

Hello Zheng Ning!
I am glad that this course has indeed helped you improve your effective communication skills. I believe your newly gained knowledge in communicating effectively would make you a better communicator on the whole.

As university students, we are often required to write reports as part of our module requirements. Learning the APA format for referencing would definitely help make our reports look more professional.

Having an agenda sent out to members before the meeting would improve efficiency of discussing issues during the meetings. I agree with you that sending agenda out to members of the comittee would enable the meeting to go on more smoothly.

I think we all learnt a lot from this module. Thanks for making my learning journey such a pleasant one. :)

I agree with you that by sending out an agenda to committee members can make meetings more productive. Everytime before a committee meeting I feel very uncomfortable because I have to attend the meetings unprepared! Now we learn that by sending an agenda before a meeting can actually solve this problem and can help the meeting go more smoothly and efficiently. Next time, I will advise my president to do the same thing as well. =)

Hi ZhengNing,
It definitely works better if you send out your agenda before the meeting, like 2-3 days time. It allows your team member to know what is the purpose of having the meeting. And if you wish to have new projects/idea, the time allocated allows them to brainstorm and finally you can have a better feedback.
