Research Proposal

ES2007S, with its title “Professional Communication: Principles and Practice”, is a module open to all the NUS undergraduates. The aim of this course is to teach the students how to become an effective communicator in various social settings, most especially in the workplace. It satisfies students’ demand of the knowledge of communication skills and thus course is welcomed by the students. However, it is observed that some students who are interested in the topics do not take this course. They hesitate because they worry about their performances in the course and scare of receiving low grades. These groups of people, however, are usually those who really want to improve their communication skills through the course. Therefore, the objective of my research is to inform the coordinator of ES2007S of the worries on the course performances from these students and their worries indeed set barriers to the promotion of the course among students. Another objective is to convince the coordinator that if a free S/U option is given to students who take this module, the course will be better promoted.

In this research, a survey is necessary. Firstly, students’ worries on the course performances need to be verified. By conducting the survey, the researchers can find out the true reasons of students’ hesitations. Whether the worry on the course performance is the main reason that keeps them away from the course will be proved. Secondly, whether a free S/U option works is unknown. Through the survey, the researchers will be aware of the attitudes of the students towards this special promotion. Whether the promotion is appreciated, and to what extent the students appreciate it will be answered by the data from the survey.

This is an interesting research topic and is closely related to us. Frankly speaking, I was one of the students who worried about the score before I chose the module. Other friends concerned about the language capability, after all, English is not our Mother Tone language. Sometimes we encounter problems in expression. So if there is implementation taken to solve this problem, students will be benefit a lot.

However, I have two concerns regarding to the S/U option. First, I never heard any module in NUS has a free S/U option. We have to point out what makes ES2007S so special to enjoy this franchise. Secondly, assuming there is a free S/U option given to this module, I think a lot of students will bid for it, since it is no harm to enjoy one more S/U. Again, students who bid for this module may not be those who really need it. And it raised another problem that those who really want this module—especially year 1 and year 2 students-- may not have enough points to bid for it.

I think we can take ES2007S as a S/U module. I saw about it on the modules poster, at the lower right corner. But the words mentioned are quite small. I heard some of my friends used 2000 bid point to get this module. I agree that the course information advertising should be promoted. I know about this course through my previous EG1417 tutor. If not I wont know about this course at all. Therefore, I agree with Zhengning’s proposal to conduct survey to find out the students’ attitudes on this course. From that we can set the feasible ways to improve the course.

I believed the popularity of a module is enhanced by our friends' recommendations at most times. After all, who would like to delve into the unknown unless he/she is really fascinated with the contents of the module. Your project can help to relieve the worries of potential students of this module. However, in order for this module to really be embraced by majority of the undergraduates, it really needs students like us who have taken the module to spread the word around about the promises of this subject. Maybe your survey can include another section on how to encourage existing students to share our experiences from this module with others so as to raise the prominence of ES 2007S.
